Merit Mixed Secondary School, Okurighwre - Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State was founded by the Proprietress / Director of Studies - Late Mrs. Victoria Nzolonwaneka Oweleke Iduh (who passed on on the 18th of November 2003) on the 18th January, 1993.
The school is a Government approved privately owned secondary school meant to respond to the express desire of the society for a post primary education with conducive learning environment for uninterrupted educational programme for serious minded students.
The school started operation on 18th January, 1993 with seven students enrolled into Junior Secondary class one in a temporary site. The opening day had an assembly session which was
conducted by Pastor Udele Of the Baptist Mission. The foundation staff were Mrs. Victoria N. Iduh - Proprietress/ Principal, Mr. P.E. Omaretseye and Mr. Isaac Ojebuweh.
Shortly after the assembly, three students were admitted and that brought the total admitted on the first day to ten (10).
On the 25th January that same year, the then Chief Inspector of Education for Sapele Local Government Area, Mr. O. P. Odiyoma paid an official visit to school for feasibility survey. Based on the available Manpower in the school, he advised that candidates be admitted into Junior Secondary class two. That was how J.S.2 came into existence shortly after the opening of the school.
Today the school has grown into a sizeable no of students and have moved to her permanent site which provides the students comfort and security, with an excellent academic environment.
We are currently working on some wings of the main structures of the school to further enhance our comfort and attend to our needs.
The establishment of the dormitories was conceived by the Proprietress - Late Mrs. Victoria N. Iduh as a centre for community, primarily to provide for studies, training, cultural development and inculcation of good character in the students resident within and outside the Sapele environs.
The foundation stone of the dormitories where laid on the 1st of March 1997. The hostel was completed and has been in full use since 2000. The school now has two hostels (a boys' and girls' hostel both walled exclusively and with two Matrons (one a dispenser/ auxiliary nurse). There is constant water supply because we have our bore hole, a 10kva generating set, able security outfit with the Police very near us and constantly checking on us.
Junior School Certificate Examination (JSCE) - 1994-2011 Merit Mixed Secondary School runs the junior Secondary and Senior Secondary Programmes as specified in the Nigerian National Policy on Education. It offers a wide variety of academic subjects taught by dedicated and professional staff. The student begins with a broad spectrum of subjects, which becomes more focused as he or she progresses. At the end, the students are prepared for Junior Certificate Examination (JSCE) where they will be examined in maximum of 13 subjects.
The Permanent Site: The journey to success has been anything but easy. We have been able to move from the temporary site to the permanent site in 2008, November. It was a glorious moment for us because our Founder - Late Mrs Victoria Nzolonwanneka Iduh - worked extremely hard to achieve this fit. Today we are sitting pretty in that dream; its now a reality.
